What is the Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation?
Sometimes people have great ideas but need help getting the money to accomplish
them. This can be especially true when those ideas revolve around fish and
wildlife. A river of red tape exists in many overlapping bureaucratic
jurisdictions and laws surrounding various funding sources in the public and
private sectors. The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation (IFWF) was created to
help people cross that river and get on with those important projects.
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the
conservation of natural resources: fish, wildlife and habitat. Among its goals
are habitat conservation and restoration, public education and
community/grassroots organization, and funding of resource projects. It meets
these goals by forging partnerships between the public and private sectors and
by supporting conservation activities that inform and educate the general public.
Headquartered in Boise, the Foundation was established in September 1990.
Interest in forming the Foundation came from several different needs, beginning with
the Morrison Knudsen Nature Center. An entity was needed to facilitate this and
similar large-scale public/private projects. In this instance, parts of the project
(such as building the Visitors Center by high school students) could not effectively
happen through a state agency, and because funding sources (such as the M.J. Murdock
Charitable Trust) could give to nonprofits, but not to government agencies.
Today, the Foundation serves as a fund-raising entity that taps new and additional
sources of income and support for the state's wildlife and associated educational
programs that are typically under-funded or without a reliable annual source of
income. It seeks grants, plans special events and is developing a major donor program
as well as exploring other funding options. It also responds to frequent requests
from community organizations for program coordination and organizing assistance. |
